UERJ: dialogue is the only acceptable path against violence

Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) is vehemently against the murder of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes and demands justice and accountability

The Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) publicly denounces the vile and cowardly assassination of Marielle Franco, councilwoman of the city of Rio de Janeiro and former student of the university, and her driver, Anderson Gomes, on March 14, 2018. UERJ reiterates its unyielding position against all forms of violence and unequivocally condemns this heinous crime.

Marielle Franco was a tireless fighter for human rights, especially for women, blacks and the LGBTQIA+ community. Her work was guided by the principles of social justice, equality and democracy. Her assassination is a blatant attack on these principles and on the very foundations of our society.

UERJ demands justice and accountability

UERJ demands a thorough and impartial investigation into this crime, with the identification and punishment of those responsible. We also demand the adoption of effective measures to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

The university community is deeply saddened by the loss of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes. We extend our condolences to their families and friends, and we will continue to fight for the ideals they defended.

Dialogue is the only acceptable path

In the face of violence, we reaffirm our belief that dialogue is the only acceptable path. We urge all sectors of society to come together to build a more just and equitable world, where violence has no place.

Violence is never the answer. It only begets more violence and perpetuates a cycle of hate and despair. We must break this cycle by standing up to violence and promoting dialogue, understanding and respect.

UERJ calls on all citizens to join us in building a society based on peace, justice and human rights. Together, we can create a world where everyone can live in safety and dignity.
